FAQ - providers, external examiners and tests

In Denmark, you are not required to attend specific teaching in order to register for a test to acquire a certificate for yachtsmen. However, many sailing schools, course providers, evening classes and sailing clubs offer teaching and courses that will prepare you for the test.

Previously, the Danish Maritime Authority has had a corps of external examiners who will visit sailing schools, course providers, evening classes and sailing clubs intending to hold tests.

Approved providers have assumed the task of authorising external examiners for tests for yachtsmen. Therefore, you must contact an approved provider if you want to register for or hold tests for yachtsmen.

In the future, approved providers will also issue by far most types of certificates for yachtsmen.

The new regulations and framework will naturally give rise to a number of questions. Here, we present some of the more general questions asked and provide answers. If you cannot find an answer to your questions here, please contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions

You must register for a test which is arranged by an approved provider of tests for yachtsmen in the presence of one of their external examiners. You can also in the future use the various training and courses offered by sailing schools, course providers, etc. and have them arrange the test.

The Danish Maritime Authority has not laid down any requirements on your preparations for a test. Consequently, we have not laid down any requirements for those who teach yachtsmen prior to a test. If you are a teacher and are, for example, affiliated with a sailing school or an adult education association that offers preparatory teaching for yachtsmen's tests, you should be aware of the requirements that may be made by approved providers of tests for yachtsmen.

You can read more about approved providers and see who has been approved here.

Anyone. There are no special requirements for the holders of tests so, actually, an approval is not needed. Please note that approved providers of tests for yachtsmen can establish criteria for the holding of a test if you want to use their external examiners. However, they must not reject requests to acquire an external examiner if you can meet the criteria laid down. The criteria must be objective and be of relevance to the holding of tests.

You should contact one of the providers of tests for yachtsmen approved by the Danish Maritime Authority and request to be authorised as an external examiner for inclusion in their corps of external examiners. You can find a list of approved providers here.

Just as now, the role of the external examiner is first and foremost to ensure that the holding of the tests is in accordance with the regulations laid down and that the level meets the requirements made by the Danish Maritime Authority. As an external examiner associated with an approved provider of tests for yachtsmen, you should be aware that the approved provider is responsible for the arrangement of a system in which the external examiner is included and that, consequently, tasks may be associated with being an external examiner of the approved provider other than those experienced as an external examiner of the Danish Maritime Authority.

You must forward an application to the Danish Maritime Authority. Interested organisations within the field of yachting who would like to know more about this possibility can read the Danish Maritime Authority's guidelines for applications as providers of tests and certificates.
