Training requirements

The safety of you and others at sea depend, to a high degree, on your knowledge about activities at sea. You can help enhance safety at sea by completing one or more training programmes for yachtsmen.

Power boat license (mandatory)

If you intend to sail a power boat, you are required to complete the power boat test. It consists of a test of your handling of the power boat, your knowledge about, inter alia, the regulations for preventing collisions at sea and aids to navigation.

You can read more about the power boat license here.

Test for certificate of competency

If you are sailing a recreational craft with a length below 15 metres, there are no requirements in Denmark for special training or exams (except for power boats). The test for the certificate of competency in sailing for yachtsmen is a possibility that you can, at your own choice, use to increase safety and pleasure at sea. The test consists of a practical test and a theoretical test, which inter alia covers the regulations for preventing collisions at sea and navigation. The certificate of competency also entitles the holder to sail a power boat.

You can read more about the test for the certificate of competency here.

Yacht master training programme (mandatory)

If you are sailing a recreational craft with a length above 15 metres, you must complete a training programme for yacht masters. The training programme for yacht masters, 3rd class, is aimed at voyages in North European waters, while the training programme for yacht masters, 1st class, is aimed at voyages on all seas.

You can read more about the training programmes for yacht masters here.
