Manning recreational craft

​​​The requirements for the master's competences increase with the craft's size. Small craft require less education and training, while large craft require more education and training.   

Recreational craft with a hull length below 15 metres

There are no requirements for formal competences for pleasure crafts below 15 metres unless they are covered by the regulations applicable to power boats.

Recreational craft with a hull length between 15 and 24 metres.

There must be a master and a mate holding certificates of competency on board recreational craft with a hull length between 15 and 24 metres.

The competence requirements are shown in this table:

If the recreational craft has a hull length above 15 metres and the engine output is above 100 kW, there must be one person on board holding a certificate of competency in motor operation for recreational craft.

There must be two persons on board holding a certificate of competency in motor operation for recreational craft for operating the propulsion machinery in connection with trade outside the Baltic and the North Sea east of 7 degrees eastern longitude.

The Danish Maritime Authority determines the engine manning for other recreational craft with a hull length of or above 15 metres with propulsion machinery of or above 100 kW.

Recreational craft with a hull length of or above 24 metres

We determine the manning for recreational craft with a length of or above 24 metres. This is done when you have, as the owner, forwarded an application to us.
