What are the requirements to obtain a certificate?

There are several types of certificates for recreational sailors and the requirements for qualifying for the certificates are different.

In the table below you can see which requirements you must meet for obtain a certificate for recreational sailing:

Certificate of Competency as Yacht Master 3rd class

Theoretical exam for Yacht Master 3rd class
Practical exam and theoretical exam for recreational sailors are required to take the Y3 exam
The power boat exam CANNNOT replace the practical exam for recreational sailors
Vision- and hearing test for recreational sailors within the last 3 years

Certificate of Competency as Yacht Master 1st class

Theoretical exam for Yacht Master 1st class
Passed exam for Yacht Master 3rd class is required to take the Y1 exam
Seagoing service:

  1. 6 months in circumstances where a certificate of competency as Yacht Master 3rd class is prescribed
  2. 6 months as a mate on board a recreational vessel with a length of at least 10 metres and has been found suitable by an assessment of prior learning.
