The Danish signing of the IALA Convention, which has been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, ends a long negotiation process with three pre-diplomatic conferences prior to the final diplomatic conference in Kuala Lumpur in February 2020. Here, the last pieces of the convention text fell into place. With the transformation, IALA will be a strong player that can help to create the framework for safe, economical and efficient shipping.
“IALA's new status as an IGO is a major step for ports and coastal states, and an important part of developing and setting common nautical standards to improve safe and efficient shipping. I am therefore very glad that Denmark has now signed the convention,” says Andreas Nordseth, Director-General of the Danish Maritime Authority.
