One year ago, the new global sulphur limit of 0.5% entered into force. The 2020 sulphur cap is still a significant challenge for the shipping industry. Uniform implementation and enforcement is key to maintaining a global level playing field for the industry while ensuring the full environmental effect of the new regulation. In this regard, the efforts of national administrations are essential.
Moving ahead
On 19-20 January, the International P2P MTCC Caribbean Workshop on IMO Global Sulphur Cap 2020 will take place. The virtual workshop is hosted online by MTCC Caribbean located in Trinidad & Tobago.
The workshop is the second of three international workshops designed to share best practices to regions that have yet to gather experience with enforcement of reduced sulphur limits in ship fuel. Each workshop invites participants from maritime administrations of the respective regions (Asia, East Africa and the Caribbean/Latin America) to discuss key issues related to the enforcement of the global sulphur limit, such as fuel samples, document checks, targeting mechanisms, remote sensoring, training of inspectors and sanctions.
Background
The project is organized by the World Maritime University in coordination with the Danish Maritime Authority and supported by the Danish Maritime Fund. Also contributing to the project is the Danish Ministry of Environment.
The first workshop was delivered in Myanmar in January of 2020 and the final workshop will be hosted by MTCC Africa in Kenya and is expected to take place in the spring of 2021. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the workshops hosted by MTCC Caribbean and MTCC Africa workshops will be held online.
