Seafarers honored on World Maritime Day 2021

Published 30-09-2021

The IMO pays tribute to the two million seafarers worldwide who have done an exceptional job in keeping the supply chains afloat during COVID-19.

This evening, the IMO will illuminate the London headquarters and the Seafarer Memorial in blue light. This will be done every year going forward to mark the annual World Maritime Day.

This year's theme for World Maritime Day, "Seafarers at the core of shipping's future", recognizes the invaluable role that seafarers play now and will continue to play in the future.

Andreas Nordseth, Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority, sends a special tribute to the seafarers who have pulled a heavy load and navigated difficult conditions during COVID-19:

"Seafarers around the world have been subject to strict guidelines and heavy burdens for the past year and a half. Many have had extraordinarily long periods away from their homes and families. We owe them a great tribute for keeping the world trade going.”
