If an agreement is reached, it is expected to be formally adopted at an extraordinary MEPC meeting in October.
For Denmark, it is a top priority to ensure that the final regulation aligns with IMO’s 2023 climate targets, which aim to make international shipping climate neutral by 2050. Achieving this will require a strong international compromise that provides clear rules for the industry and supports the global green transition of the maritime sector. Denmark is also working to ensure that the regulation includes effective incentives for the production and use of green fuels and supports the green transition in developing countries.
Next steps in the review of IMO’s short-term measures
The Committee will also continue its review of IMO’s current energy efficiency measures, with particular focus on the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). The annual reduction targets for ships’ carbon intensity from 2027 to 2030 are to be determined. In addition, the committee will discuss how IMO can address challenges and improve the CII framework in the next phase of the review.
