Today is World Maritime Day, and the theme for this year is 'MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on.' As a commemoration of the day and as a tribute to MARPOL (The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships) and its 50-year legacy of protecting the oceans from shipping-related pollution, the Great Belt Bridge will be illuminated tonight.

"Shipping is the most globalized sector and pivotal for trade, connectivity, and economic activities around the world. Therefore, global regulation is crucial to ensure the global impact of the measures established to meet the increasing demands for sustainability and climate neutrality. MARPOL has proved to be a strong framework to achieve this and deserves to be celebrated," says Director General Andreas Nordseth.

One of the next important steps under MARPOL is the development of regulation implementing the goals of IMO's historic climate strategy from July 2023.

The Danish Maritime Authority extends its sincere gratitude to Sund & Bælt for their contribution to this day.
