International Day for Women in Maritime: Shaping the future of maritime safety

Published 18-05-2024

Every year on 18 May, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is celebrating women in the maritime industry.

The day is intended to promote the recruitment, retention and sustained employment of women in the maritime sector, raise the profile of women in maritime, strengthen the commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality) and support work to address the current gender imbalance in maritime.

With this year’s theme, "Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety", the IMO recognizes the crucial role women play in enhancing safety measures, whether through their roles as seafarers, maritime professionals, or in leadership positions.
